Poll: Voters Favor Taxing the Rich to Lower Deficit

As the old saying goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” and this screenshot (right) of the Huffington Post’s lead headline July 6 speaks volumes: “Swing State Voters Say ‘Tax the Rich’.”

So is it really possible that nearly 80% of voters support reducing the national debt by raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans? The survey, conducted by Public Policy Polling last month, says yes. But Republican leaders in congress aren’t letting hard facts or their constituents’ voices get in the way – they’ve dismissed efforts to raise federal revenue and close the deficit as “rather pathetic” and “gimmicks”.

No matter what the politicians may say, the numbers don’t lie. Nearly 4,500 likely voters were surveyed across four key states – Ohio, Montana, Missouri and Minnesota – and they favored tax increases for the wealthy (those making $1 million or more annually) by greater than a three-to-one margin. That’s an overwhelming majority under any circumstances, let alone the polarized political atmosphere we live in today.

In any case, the new polling data underscores a key point that MASSUNITING has made since day one: in a fair economy, major corporations and the ultra-rich will pay their fair share in taxes, just like the rest of us do. The American people have spoken clearly in favor of these common sense solutions, and it’s time our elected leaders took notice.
